What Is a Pip in Forex and Gold? Real Examples

A pip is the unit traders use to say how far price moved. Here is what one pip is on EURUSD, on yen pairs and on gold, with real prices from October 2026.

Quick answer

A pip is a small, fixed step in price. On EURUSD and most currency pairs, one pip is 0.0001 (the 4th decimal). On yen pairs like USDJPY it is 0.01. On gold (XAUUSD) on SocialCharts it is $0.10, so a $1 move is 10 pips.

What a pip is

Traders say things like "EURUSD gained fifty pips" or "gold moved six hundred pips today". A pip is simply a fixed step in price, so everyone can describe a move the same way, whatever the price level.

Which digit counts as the pip depends on how the instrument is priced:

EURUSD · most pairs
1.11403
1 pip = 0.0001 · 4th decimal
USDJPY · yen pairs
157.851
1 pip = 0.01 · 2nd decimal
XAUUSD · gold
4032.38
1 pip = $0.10 · 1st decimal

A real EURUSD day

On October 28, 2026, EURUSD opened at 1.1126 and closed at 1.1155. That is about +29 pips. From the low to the high, price travelled 57 pips.

One day is not the whole story. Over the last 20 trading days, EURUSD moved 65 pips a day on average from low to high. Switch the instrument to compare:

Pips and points (pipettes)

Many platforms show a fifth digit on EURUSD. That last digit is a point, also called a pipette. One point is one tenth of a pip.

So 1.11403 → 1.11413 is 10 points, but only 1 pip. If an order ticket asks for points and you type pips, your stop ends up ten times closer than you meant.

Yen pairs

Pairs with the Japanese yen have fewer decimals, like 157.85. Here one pip is the second decimal, 0.01. On October 22, 2026, USDJPY travelled 185 pips from high to low (158.244 → 156.392).

Gold (XAUUSD)

Gold is priced in U.S. dollars per ounce, like 4032.38. On SocialCharts charts, one gold pip is 10 cents, so a $1 move is 10 pips.

On October 22, 2026, gold travelled 1,051 pips from high to low: 4126.26 → 4021.14, or $105. Over the last 20 trading days it moved 657 pips a day on average.

!

Check your platform for gold. Not every broker counts a gold pip the same way: some use one cent, some ten cents, some one dollar. The same move can be "105", "1,051" or "10,512" pips depending on where you look.

How much money is one pip worth? That depends on your position size. It is covered in the lesson What Is a Lot? Lot Size and Pip Value.

Frequently asked questions

Is a pip the same as a point?

No. On a 5-digit EURUSD quote, a point (pipette) is one tenth of a pip. 10 points = 1 pip.

How many pips is $1 on gold?

On SocialCharts, 10 pips, because one gold pip is $0.10. Other platforms may count differently, so check yours.

Why is the yen pip different?

USDJPY is quoted with two or three decimals instead of four or five, so the pip moves to the 2nd decimal: 0.01.

How much is one pip worth in money?

It depends on position size. On one standard lot of EURUSD, one pip is about $10. The lesson on lot size has the full calculation.
