When Does Gold Move the Most? Gold’s Busiest Hours, Measured

Gold does not move evenly through the day. We measured 2,402 hours of real gold prices to find its busiest and quietest hours, and what they look like on your clock.

Quick answer

In 103 trading days of gold (June to October 2026), the busiest hour was 13:00 UTC, with an average range of about $29, followed by 12:00 and 14:00 UTC. The quietest was 20:00 UTC, just under $10. The Asian morning peaks at 01:00 UTC (about $25). From November to March, the US data hour moves from 12:30 to 13:30 UTC.

Gold moves about $90 on an average day, but not evenly. In its busiest hour, gold usually moves about three times as much as in its quietest one. Which hours? We measured every one of them.

How we measured

For every hour from June 1 to October 23, 2026, we took the distance between the hour’s high and its low: the hour’s range. Then we averaged each hour of the day across 103 trading days (2,402 hourly bars of XAUUSD). The whole period was in summer time, so the clock never shifted.

Each column is one hour of the day in UTC; the taller the column, the more gold usually moved in that hour. 21:00 UTC is the market’s daily break.

Two things stand out: a tall cluster in the early afternoon UTC, and a smaller peak in the Asian morning.

The Asian morning

The first peak comes at 01:00 UTC: about $25 on average, the fourth busiest hour of the day. That is 9:00 in Shanghai and Hong Kong and 8:00 in Jakarta: the Asian trading day getting started. On June 11, 2026, gold moved $52 in that single hour. Three hours later, at noon in Shanghai, it calms down to about $12.

London: quieter than you think

London opens at 07:00 UTC in summer, and many traders expect gold to become more active then. In our data it mostly did not: from 07:00 to 12:00 UTC gold moved about $15 an hour, and only 8% of daily highs and lows formed in those five hours. That is what these five months show. A different period could look different. That is why we measure.

The big hours

The busiest stretch of the day is 12:00, 13:00 and 14:00 UTC, at about $25 to $30 an hour. Why then? At 12:30 UTC (8:30 in New York) many US economic reports are released, and an hour later the US stock market opens.

  • On August 19, 2026, gold rose $74 in the 12:00 UTC hour alone, about 740 pips.
  • 28% of daily highs and lows formed in just four hours, from 12:00 to 16:00 UTC.
  • On Fridays, the 12:00 and 13:00 hours were even busier: $33 on average, against $28 on other days. The US jobs report comes out on the first Friday of the month.
!

Big hours mean big uncertainty, in both directions. More movement does not mean easier money.

The quiet hours

The quietest hour is 20:00 UTC, 4 p.m. in New York: just under $10, a third of the busiest hour. Then the market takes a short daily break from 21:00 to 22:00 UTC, which is why that column is missing. 04:00 and 10:00 UTC are quiet too: noon in Shanghai and late morning in London. But quiet does not mean safe: a move can start at any hour.

Does the day of the week matter?

In these five months, Wednesday was the busiest day: gold’s daily range averaged 2.8% of the price. Monday was the calmest, at 1.8%. Over twelve months, the days almost even out, all between 2.3% and 2.6%. The result can change when we measure a longer period.
